Awesome Citizenship

This week, we began to learn about the Cocoa Principles!  Each kiddo has a star hanging on a bulletin board with their name on it.  On each point of the star, there is a Cocoa Principle.  (Community, Opportunity, Citizenship, Ownership and Academics) This week, we learned about community, opportunity and citizenship.  Students work towards earning a sticker for each point of their star.  When they earn a sticker for each of the points of the star, they get to pick a prize out of the prize box!

To earn a sticker for community, students should show consistent efforts in saying hello and smiling, respecting the differences of others, and encouraging others in their words and actions.

To earn a sticker for opportunity, students should show consistent efforts in including and welcoming others, taking chances and participating.

To earn a sticker for citizenship, students should show consistent efforts in doing what is right even when no one is looking, for treating others as they would like to be treated and by volunteering to help others.

Here's a picture of good citizenship!!

Class Pic!

Yay! I have permission from everyone's parents to post their kids pics!! Here's our class picture!!  We made "No David's!" when we went over our classroom rules on the first day of school!

Lovin' the smartboard!

Another great start to the day!  Hopefully, most of you received special messages from your kiddos this morning via email.  If you didn't get one, that's because your kiddo was too shy to record their voice and send a message!  No worries!  I'm gonna try to get one out of them by the end of the day!

This morning, we reviewed the letter sounds for /m/ and /s/.  The kids enjoyed using the smartboard to practice!

Reflection on the day

Okay.. So I'm pretty sure I should get to bed so I'm ready for the 19 kiddos that I will greet in the morning.  However, I'm just sitting here reflecting on the day and thought I'd share my thoughts with all of you.

Wonderful day!  Your children are all amazing and special kiddos!  I'm so lucky to have them in my life!  Today was a special day because I got to know your kids just a little bit more than yesterday.  If I didn't need sleep, I would go on to list what I love about each of your kids, but I'm thinking they will benefit more from me getting a little bit of sleep tonight!

Today, from a teacher's perspective... I counted heads probably 100 times to be sure we didn't lose anyone from our travels from one place to another.  The kiddos are getting good at going through the line at the cafeteria!  One little kiddo, Andrew, asked if he could go get another milk.  I said, "Sure! Take your money with you."  He said, "But it's free."  I said, "I don't think so buddy.  Why don't you  take your money just in case?"  Sure enough, I was outsmarted by a kid, yet again!  Apparently, school lunch was free today!

By the way, your kiddos LOVE being read to!  I think they are most attentive when I'm reading a story.  Today, we read "Sneaky Weasel." It's about a weasel who is not a very good friend.  Then, we talked about what makes a good and a bad friend.  Our class is definitely full of "good friends!"

Okay.  Off to bed!  Can't wait to see what's in store for me in the morning!

Truckin' Along on Day 2!

We're truckin' along on Day 2 of first grade!

The kids drew lovely pictures of their families and were so proud to share stories about familiar faces!

This morning, we reviewed letters and sounds and the kids did awesome!

We learned some new "amazing words" too!  Ask your child what the words furniture, tidy and unwind mean!

We took pictures for our birthday bulletin board!  They had a great time getting all jazzed up in party wear!  See the picture below!

Can't wait to see what the rest of the day brings!  I LOVE FIRST GRADE!!! :) :) :)
